The first dispensary selling adult-use cannabis in the immediate Boston area is set to open on March 23, 2019.

New England Treatment Access (NETA), which currently operates a medical marijuana dispensary at the Brookline site, has announced it also will begin selling recreational marijuana products to adults 21 and older.

NETA‘s Northampton outlet was one of the first two in the state to open in November 2018; the other was Cultivate in Leicester. Recreational marijuana is available at a dozen stores around the state, but the Brookline location is the first in close proximity to Boston. There are no dispensaries yet in the city itself.

The NETA dispensary in Brookline operates from within the former Brookline Savings Bank on 160 Washington St. The conversion retains the elaborate woodwork, railings and molding, gilded Corinthian columns, and the steel bank vault behind the checkout counter.

NETA representatives said they are working with police and local officials on traffic and parking issues and to assure a safe opening.
