We are now two states shy of having half of all 50 in this country have legal, recreational marijuana with the induction of Minnesota. Governor Tim Walz signed this into law late last month.

In the state, consumers are allowed to possess up to 2 ounces in public places and limits the age to 21 and up like everywhere else in the country. The law goes into effect on August 1st.

Interestingly, the law allows for 2 pounds of marijuana to be stored at one’s home, and up to 8 marijuana plants grown (but only 4 mature plants at a time).

In terms of retail shops opening, it’s looking like that won’t happen until at least May of next year, when the government will start accepting applications for dispensaries.

The legislation will also expunge any misdemeanor charges centered around marijuana, and reduced sentencing for more serious offenses.

This is the second state to legalize this year, after Delaware in April.
