Beto O’Rourke, Democratic candidate for governor of Texas said that if he was elected, he would pursue legalizing marijuana. O’Rourke believes that if someone stepped up to the job, the Republican majority within the state’s legislature would get on board. Although there are multiple Republican states within the US that have legalized marijuana to some degree, Texas is not one of them.

Now considered a purple state, Texas representatives are looking for new ways to bring in tax money. One great way to do this would be to legalize cannabis. A large percentage of the population supports marijuana legalization. Even over the last few years, multiple bills have been introduced, approved, then shot down in Texas legislature due to a lack of bipartisanship.

These comments from O’Rourke come from the 2022 South by Southwest conference which happened a few weeks ago. O’Rourke also spoke on multiple other issues facing Texas now such as the egregious anti-trans bill enacted a few weeks ago.
