A fun promotional campaign was recently launched by The Travel Agency, a New York City based marijuana retail company. In it, they showed pigeons with apt-fitting backpacks fill with your marijuana order. Apparently, The Travel Agency had trained 20 pigeons to delivery cannabis and called it “Project Pigeon”.

This caused some waves, and news organizations ran with it. However, it was all a bit of a stunt, as they confirmed with Marijuana Moment. With this in mind, the reactions to the initial announcement were pretty funny.

For instance, an animal rights activist, Megan Walton, was not happy, saying “it’s still very upsetting to even conceptualize a campaign like this, centering on exploiting pigeons.” It was also reported on by Time Out, Fox 5, and Brooklyn Eagle before it came out that it was all fake.

So no, we won’t be getting carrier pigeons delivering our pre-roll any time soon, but it does shine a light on the strict processes of weed delivery in the city. For one, the ID verification couldn’t possibly occur with a pigeon.

I’m all for inventive ways to get access to cannabis, and I like where this company’s head is at.
