Small. Discrete. Hassle-free. Those are the words that come to mind after experiencing Ameri, the second of Toronto’s newly-legal cannabis stores.

The best part about it? The location, for sure. Nestled on a quiet stretch of Cumberland Ave., Ameri finds itself smack dab in the middle of Yorkville. Whether you’ve been studying diligently for that final exam in the Toronto Reference Library, or shopping for some haute couture in the neighbourhood’s clothing stores, Ameri will likely be the closest legal cannabis store (at least until Fire & Flower opens its location on Bloor).

Quick Hit

An independent cannabis shop, Ameri isn’t part of a chain like some other stores are and it shows in the small size of its store floor. But visitors shouldn’t be discouraged: the small interior allows you to connect with an employee and a point-of-sale system swiftly, so you can get in and get out quickly.

Vibe

The store’s interior is simple, bright-white, with a green pulsating light that runs around the corners of the ceiling. One wall is accented by images of large green pot leaves, but it’s not tacky. It’s no frills, but definitely cool enough to show your parents.

Customer Service

When you first walk into Ameri, you’ll be greeted by a security guard who will manually check your ID (no electronic ID scanner here). Then you’ll walk through a set of opaque glass doors and into the showroom.

On your left are three counters. They each show off 5 to 10 dried cannabis strains, that you can look at and smell through fastened transparent cases. Each counter also has an express check-out tablet, where consumers can place an order for dried cannabis products.

From there, your order will be sent to one of the final point-of-sale kiosks to your right, where employees prepare your order and check you out.

Products and Pricing

The store sells a variety of dried cannabis and prerolls from brands such as INDIVA, Aurora, Seven Oaks, Broken Coast, and LBS (to name just a few).

For a shop its size the store does have a sizeable selection of capsules, including CBD capsules by Liiv. But be warned: A worker tells us that CBD products are flying off the shelves, so selection may be limited when you go.

The store does have a small selection of cannabis oils, and typically has at least one product in stock, including a CBD spray from Hexo. But again, don’t be disappointed if they’re sold out of any particular CBD product when you go.

If you’re looking for accessories, Ameri is pretty light on that front. The store stocks RAW brand rolling papers and grinders but not much else in the way of accessories.

What You Should Know

When you walk into the first set of doors, turn right. Otherwise you’ll find yourself walking upstairs to an unrelated lawyer’s office. Now that cannabis is legal, you shouldn’t need their services.

There is no wheelchair accessibility but a store spokesperson tells us that the entrance is being re-developed so that those of all abilities can shop for their cannabis.
