Jimmy Buffett is once again putting his money where his music is with the launch of weed brand Coral Reefer through a global licensing deal with Surterra Wellness.
Coral Reefer was set to surf into the Florida medical marijuana market on April 19, 2019. Surterra plans to launch the line in 20 Florida storefronts initially and expand into Nevada and California markets by mid-summer 2019.
“It never dawned on me that Coral Reefer would be anything other than a cool name for a tropical band born out of the Key West lifestyle in the mid-’70s,” singer, songwriter, and hotel entrepreneur Jimmy Buffett said in the press release. “But life is supposed to be about having fun and staying healthy enough to enjoy it. I think Coral Reefer will help a lot of folks do that.”
The Buffett connection is seen in Coral Reefer’s kitschy names and its “tropically inspired” product line. It includes vaporizers with different level of intensity ratios: Low Tide, Mid Tide, High Tide, and Tsunami. The line also offers disposable vaporizers as well as “TideRiders”, which are rechargeable vapes with pods.

Surterra’s CEO and Chair, William “Beau” Wrigley Jr., heir to the Wrigley gum empire fortune, said in the press release that the company intends to give more access to patients in Florida through “best-in-class partnerships.”
“Jimmy and his team share our commitment to quality and the belief that individuals can find personal wellness through the relief enhancing benefits and healing properties of cannabis,” Wrigley said.
The cannabis formulas include additional Buffett-esque titles like “Cabana Daydreamin’,” with 1:1 THC and cannabidiol (CBD), “Seas the Day,” with 4:1 CBD to THC ratio, and “Surfin’ in a Hurricane,” a THC-only strain that falls under its Tsunami strength level.
Buffett has been an advocate of medical marijuana since 1974 and the creation of the Coral Reefer Band, a touring band that was once fictional, with imaginary members born out of Jimmy Buffett’s mind.
He spoke out in support of Florida’s Amendment 2, the Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions, in 2014. The bill did not pass that year but then made it onto the Florida general election in November 2016 and passed by a supermajority with more than 71% in favor.
