Governor Hochul is utilizing that newly appointed momentum as best she can, and has already appointed two key positions in the Cannabis Control Board and Office of Cannabis Management.
In the same day, a special session at the State Senate approved the two nominations.
Those appointed were former New York Assemblywoman Tremaine Wright (chair of the Control Board) and former Drug Policy Alliance staffer Christopher Alexander (executive director of the Office of Cannabis Management).
“We’re definitely excited that the governor has prioritized rolling this out,” said Christopher Alexander, the new Executive Director of the OCM. “We had a six month delay—we’re behind six months already—and so the [governor’s] priority, she’s been very clear that she wants to get this going.”
In total, the Governor will be appointing three members of the Control Board, and the Senate and Assembly will appoint one more each. This Control Board will be overseeing the independent Office of Cannabis Management, which will be in charge of establishing and overseeing a Cannabis Marketplace.
No word yet on when these next appointments will be made, but judging by the speed of these two, we can assume it won’t be too long.
