As long as Governor Newsom signs a bill coming his way, we may be seeing some consumption sites for any illicit drug pop up in the state of California.

A 21-11 vote in favor of the bill occurred on Monday after it passed through some committees with some amendments attached. It’s been quite the journey for the bill, having initially been filed in December 2020 and first passing the full senate last year in April.

In the bill, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, and Oakland would be the only areas eligible to open up Consumption sites. However, that may change if these sites prove successful.

Last year, Rhode Island signed a bill into law creating a pilot program for Safe Consumption Sites. So, from the smallest state to the biggest state comes a similar bill.

Senator Scott Wiener is keeping busy with legislation that helps fight the war on drugs, with another bill that would legalize psychedelic possession he sponsored going before the Assembly Appropriations Committee today. That bill would then be cleared for a full floor vote.
