In a pivot that would seem ridiculous in the 60’s and 70’s of last century, more people consume marijuana than smoke cigarettes, according to a new study.
The researchers took data of over 40,000 participants from 2015 to 2023 and showed a sharp decline of cigarettes at the same time that marijuana was rising steadily. Cannabis use went from 3.9% all the way to 10.6% of the population in 2023. Inversely, cigarette-use went from 15% in 2015 to 8.8% in 2023.
Of course, there are some other major factors, including vaping. A recent gallup poll found that 8% of Americans vape, and while there isn’t a clear study done for zyn pouches, it could be that these cigarette smokers just transitioned to a different form of ingesting nicotine as opposed to switching over to marijuana.
Still, this would be unthinkable just a few decades ago.
