The U.S. Department of Energy has set aside $45 million to support the development of technologies that can convert buildings into net carbon storage structures.

Monday it was announced that technologies have been able to overcome past barriers including expenses, scarcity, and geographic limitations of carbon-storing materials. These new technologies aim to reduce and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

All of this contributes to President Biden’s plan to reach net zero emissions in the U.S. by 2050. “Building materials and construction techniques offer huge promise as carbon sinks… As it has done in so many other sectors of our economy, (the agency) is going to try to change the game yet again.” said Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm in a statement.

Over the next decade we will see a large increase in the amount of carbon storage facilities around the globe. Hopefully with a reduction in carbon emissions and increase in carbon storage, the world will be able to efficiently combat climate change.
