You know what it is: Cheech & Chong‘s 1978 landmark stoner comedy is the movie that both secured and expanded the cannabis corner of the pop culture map.

“Up in Smoke” spawned a long line of movies that reveal hidden jokes and gemlike moments when you watched them with your “stoned goggles” on (“Dazed and Confused,” “The Big Lebowski,” the “Harold and Kumar” franchise, and most recently, “Inherent Vice,” to name a few). What better time than the month of 4/20 to revisit this mammoth (and still hilarious) progenitor of stoner media as we know it?

What is it?
The 2009 stoner/action-buddy comedy hybrid starring Seth Rogen and James Franco as a bumbling pair of stoners on the run.
Why watch high?
Every generation has their its comedy (or comedies, depending on how lit your particular generation was in their prime). “Pineapple Express” is the stoner comedy of the mid-to-late 2000s comedy scene ruled by Judd Apatow and crew. Eleven years later, some aspects of “Pineapple Express” may feel a little dated, but it remains a product of top-tier comedy talent at the height of their powers, and it’s sure to provide some low-stakes, 420-friendly laughs.

‘Into the Dark: I’m Just Fucking With You’ — Hulu
What is it?
The latest entry in Hulu’s monthly anthology series is produced by modern low-budget horror juggernaut Blumhouse Productions. Each feature-length episode is themed around a holiday from the month of its release. April’s episode, aptly titled “I’m Just Fucking With You,” is centered around April Fool’s Day.
Why watch high?
“I’m Just Fucking With You” ’s premise, which subjects two siblings to a harrowing series of over-the-top practical jokes for one night in a strange motel, is the stuff paranoid weed fantasies are made of. If you’re interested in subjecting your high senses to that sort of thing, this gorgeously neon-soaked terror ride may be prime entertainment for your 4/20 watchlist.

‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Part 2 — Netflix
What is it?
The second season of Netflix’s smart, sexy, dark, poppy, and surprisingly metal take on the Archie comics series of the same name.
Why watch high?
“Sabrina” ’s debut season was one of our favorite high binges of 2018, offering a gorgeously dank, spooky-stoney visual palette to go with all the teen drama and supernatural happenings. From the looks of the latest trailer, Season 2 will be cranking everything up to 11.

‘Deadpool 2’ — HBO
What is it?
The sequel to the raunchy, ultraviolent, we-get-it-that-it’s-R-rated superhero movie starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular Merc with a Mouth.
Why watch high?
The last decade has given us plenty of great superhero movies to watch high (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “Doctor Strange,” both “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Vol. 2,” “The Lego Batman Movie,” “Aquaman,” and the first “Deadpool,” to name a few), and “Deadpool 2” certainly ranks high (pun only partially intended) among them.

‘Phantom Thread’ — HBO
What is it?
Paul Thomas Anderson‘s weird, dark, funny, fever dream of a period-drama, starring Daniel Day-Lewis in his self-proclaimed final role as an eccentric 1950s London dressmaker who falls for a waitress played by Hollywood newcomer and remarkable scene-stealer Vicky Krieps. The romance that follows is equal parts dazzling, maddening, and bizarre.
Why watch high?
In the March 2019 streaming list, we included Anderson’s “Inherent Vice” — a new stoner comedy classic — in our watch-while-lit-list. “Phantom Thread,” in many ways, is a far cry from “Inherent Vice.” But Anderson’s sensual, hyper-sensory approach to the material arguably makes the film an even more visceral, immediate joy for the senses. If you’re looking for some prestige lit-viewing to go with a few choice dabs this 4/20, “Phantom Thread” is the indulgence for you.
