While 4/20 has come and gone, it that doesn’t mean couch-lock time is over. In the modern age of content overload, the question of what to watch is an eternal one. Looking for the stoniest shows and movies to watch high this month? Here are some lit-picks coming to major streaming platforms in May 2019.

‘Grass is Greener’ — Netflix

What Is It?

This feature documentary, directed by rapper and hip-hop pioneer Fab 5 Freddy, made its Netflix debut on 4/20. If you haven’t yet found the time to check out this well-timed, laser-focused exploration of music and black history in America’s cultural, political, and racial war on marijuana, make May the month to smoke a joint and educate yourself.

Why Watch High?

The documentary explores weed’s influence on music and popular culture with style, reverence, and deliberation; highlighting artists such as Louis Armstrong, Bob Marley, Snoop Dogg and Cypress Hill.

‘Dazed and Confused’ — Hulu

What Is It?

There’s never a wrong time to watch (or re-watch) “Dazed and Confused,” Richard Linklater‘s classic stoned-hangout movie. Author Chuck Klosterman wrote in 2011, “I have watched ‘Dazed and Confused’ approximately sixty-five times, and I have been stoned for approximately sixty-four of those viewings. At this point, it seems unfathomable to watch this movie without being high; in fact, it’s entirely possible that watching this movie actively releases THC into my bloodstream.”

Why Watch High?

You don’t necessarily have to be stoned to enjoy a cannabis culture classic like “Dazed and Confused,” but it’s certainly a “high-goggles” movie that reveals more of itself to you when you light up and let it’s meandering, meaningful, hazy rock-n-roll vibes wash over you. “Dazed and Confused” will be streaming on Hulu on May 1.

‘Tuca & Bertie’ — Netflix

What Is It?

Created by Lisa Hanawalt, producer of “BoJack Horseman,” and adopting the same animation style, “Tuca & Bertie” is a new Netflix series starring the equally hilarious Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong as the voices of two thirty-something single women (who are also birds) and live in the same apartment building.

Why Watch High?

It’s yet to be seen whether this show will capture the magic or success of “BoJack,” but the caliber of the cast and creators alone make it worth checking out during your next introspective evening sesh at home. “Tuca & Bertie” premieres on Netflix May 3, 2019.

‘Suspiria’ (2018) — Amazon Prime

What Is It?

For our high-horror fans out there, the Amazon-produced “Suspiria” — a remake of Dario Argento’s trippy cult classic — will have its streaming premiere on Amazon Prime on May 3.

Why Watch High?

Though not a psychedelic high-watch in the vein of the original “Suspiria,” director Luca Guadagnino‘s take is a textured, gonzo hyper-sensory drama with striking body-horror imagery and a lucid, engaging soundtrack by Thom Yorke. Pair this one with your favorite mild edible for optimal effect.

‘Punisher: War Zone’ — Amazon Prime and Hulu

What Is It?

We included this largely forgotten 2008 Marvel flick in our recent list of the Top 10 Superhero Movies to Watch High.

Why Watch High?

“Punisher: War Zone is a campy mess — delightful in its dank execution of R-rated comic book action, bizarre performances, and hazy-neon-alley production design. Your high senses will thank you for this one. “Punisher: War Zone” will be available to stream on Amazon Prime and Hulu on May 16 and 17, 2019, respectively.

‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale — HBO

What Is It?

Here’s the thing: you’re either watching “Game of Thrones” or you’re not. As we’re at the halfway mark of the show’s final epic season, we’re not about to tell prospective newcomers to jump on the hype train right this minute.

Why Watch High?

Consider this a reminder for the initiated to be prepared — both emotionally and … with weed — for the end of this song of ice and fire. And don’t forget to brush up on all the fan theories that only make sense to stoners. The final episode of “Game of Thrones” airs May 19, 2019, on HBO.

‘Broad City’ Season 5 — Hulu

What Is It?

The series finale of “Broad City,” Comedy Central’s hit show starring millennial weed queens Abbi Jacobson and Illana Glazer, aired on March 28, 2019. For all who didn’t get a chance to catch up with Jacobson and Glazer for the cable airing of their fifth and final season, every episode will be streaming on Hulu May 27, 2019.

Why Watch High?

Part of “Broad City”’s cultural legacy will be the series’ ability to show us stoners a side of ourselves we’ve never seen on screen before. As you gear up for a hazy binge of the show’s heart-wrenching final episodes, check out our ranking of every time Abbi and Illana smoke weed in the show.

‘The Terror’ — Hulu

What Is It?

Another one for our readers who like to get high and watch spooky shit, the first season of AMC’s horror anthology series “The Terror” will be streaming on Hulu on May 29, 2019. Based on the 2007 novel of the same name, “The Terror” is a fictionalized account of a lost British expedition to the Arctic in 1845.

Why Watch High?

A Lovecraftian tale of isolation, ghosts, monsters, and cannibalism unfolds with spooky, mind-bending imagery, an eerie atmosphere, and moments of claustrophobic intensity that make “The Terror” a thrilling show to discover on your next lit-binge watch.
