Yes, marijuana has been recreationally legal in the state of California for years now, but it has taken a new step this week by prohibiting employers from firing their employees for off-the-clock weed habits.

The bill was signed on Sunday by Governor Newsom, but doesn’t go into effect until January 2024. Specifically, employers are not to able to make hiring, firing, or other employment decisions based on the results of a urine or hair test.

There are, of course, exceptions to the bill. Anyone working in building and construction are still subjected to urine tests, as well as someone applying for a job that requires a federal background check, considering that marijuana is still federally illegal.

The signing of the bill makes California the 7th state to take this action against urine and hair tests.
