A bill that has provisions to delay the recriminalizing of certain hemp that contains THC has been signed by the President. The idea here is to give lawmakers more time to create legislation that instead would regulate the hemp as opposed to outright banning it.
The planned start date of the ban has moved from November to December 11.
Back in 2018, Trump signed the Farm Bill, that legalized all hemp immediately. However, after this, newer strains were discovered that had very similar psychoactive abilities as marijuana. Thus, the hemp loophole was created and has been confusing states like Texas ever since.
The provision in the broader funding bill has become a bit of a sticking point for some Republicans, in which a small group of them threatened to ruin their leaderships agenda if the delay advanced. That ended up being a bluff.
We’ll soon see what these regulations start to look like. It certainly seems like a more nuanced approach, and we can always use more of that.
