What Is Driving the Rise in Cannabis Use Disorder?

As cannabis legalization spreads across many U.S. states and other countries, the landscape of cannabis consumption is shifting dramatically. While the plant is often perceived as relatively benign compared to other substances, recent data highlight a concerning increase in cannabis use disorder (CUD)—a condition marked by problematic cannabis use that interferes with daily life.

This rise is not merely a statistical anomaly but reflects broader changes in availability, potency, and social norms. Higher concentrations of THC in products and easier access have likely contributed to increased consumption and, by extension, more cases of CUD.

Understanding Cannabis Use Disorder

Cannabis use disorder is characterized by symptoms such as cravings, unsuccessful attempts to quit, and continued use despite negative consequences. It is a recognized condition that can affect mental health, motivation, and overall functioning, though it varies widely in severity and impact.

One challenge is that public awareness about CUD remains limited, and many people do not recognize when their use has become problematic. This can delay seeking help and complicate efforts for early intervention.

The Public Health Gap

Despite the uptick in cannabis-related disorders, public health infrastructure has been slow to respond. Prevention programs, screening tools, and treatment resources specifically targeting CUD are underdeveloped compared to those for alcohol or opioids.

Additionally, healthcare providers may lack training or resources to effectively address cannabis-related problems, further widening the gap between need and care. As cannabis use becomes more normalized, neglecting this aspect of public health risks undermining the benefits of legalization.

Where We Go From Here

Addressing the rise in cannabis use disorder requires a multifaceted approach:

  • Enhanced Education: Increasing public and clinical awareness about CUD symptoms and risks.
  • Improved Screening: Integrating routine screening for cannabis-related problems into healthcare visits.
  • Accessible Treatment: Expanding evidence-based treatment options tailored to cannabis use disorder.
  • Regulatory Considerations: Monitoring product potency and marketing to mitigate excessive use.

As public health systems catch up, balancing cannabis’s potential benefits with its risks will be critical. Recognizing and responding to cannabis use disorder is an essential step in ensuring safer, more informed consumption patterns.
